Law Of Attraction History: The Origins Of The Law Of Attraction Uncovered
Whether you're new to the Law of Attraction history or have been working on manifestation for a while, you may have wondered about where the key ideas originally came from. Is it a relatively new phenomenon? Or, does it come from ancient teachings? Have people always described it in the same way? Have we improved our ability to harness our potential for manifestation? These facts are often absent from Law of Attraction books and articles. However, learning them can do much to enhance your understanding.
In this guide to the real history of the Law of Attraction, we'll explore the roots of manifestation. Plus, we can trace how our grasp of the meaning and science behind the Law of Attraction has grown across time. Throughout, we'll consider the contributions of major authors in the field. We will also make some informed predictions about where the future of the manifestation discipline may be headed.
When Was The Law Of Attraction First Discovered?
If we look back far enough, we see that the roots of the Law of Attraction can be found in a range of ancient practices and Eastern teachings. While it wasn't called the Law of Attraction in ancient times, it was referred to in Buddhist writings as well as in Christianity.
For example, the Buddha famously said that our thoughts make us what we are. Plus, Jesus can be interpreted as telling us about our limitless power to create.
“All that we are is a result of what we have thought.”
– Buddha
It is widely believed that because the Law of Attraction has always determined the course of our lives, humanity has always carried some awareness of it (even if only subconsciously). However, the phrase “Law of Attraction” didn't come into use until the work of Madame Helena Blavatsky.
19th Century New Thought Authors And Manifestation
The 19th century arguably marked the beginning of the New Thought tradition. In turn, this led to concepts like manifestation entering the public consciousness. While a number of authors played key roles in this crucial developmental period, Helena Blavatsky and Thomas Troward were among two of the most significant.
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
Helena Blavatsky gave spiritual instruction and guidance across a huge range of different countries in the 19th century. By this time she had a reputation for being extremely spiritually gifted. She drew on ancient religious traditions to write a book called The Secret Doctrine. Much of what she believed overlapped with what we now call The Law of Attraction.
In particular, she contended that our thoughts about ourselves and our identity are what define who we are and what we're capable of. She emphasized our ability to shape reality, and our power to move past our own limitations.
Both of these messages are found in contemporary manifestation teachings.
Helena Blavatsky Quotes
“The Universe is worked and guided from within outwards.”
“What writes history is the power of ideas. And every moment offers the potential to write something new.”
“Do not be afraid of your difficulties. Do not wish you could be in other circumstances than you are. For when you have made the best of an adversity, it becomes the stepping stone to a splendid opportunity.”
“Neither success nor safety is to be found outside self-development.”
Thomas Troward
Similarly, Thomas Troward's work in the 19th century is widely believed to have influenced some of the most significant contemporary Law of Attraction monographs, including The Secret. He is described by some as “mystic Christian”. In addition, he shared Madame Blavatsky's believe that we will learn the most by combining teachings from a range of spiritual traditions.
Thomas Troward Quotes
“My minds a center of divine operations.”
“Belief in limitation is the one and only thing that causes limitation.”
“We cannot really think in one way and act in another.”
“The secret to enjoying life is to take an interest in it.”
Early 20th Century Law Of Attraction History
After the trailblazing and inspiring publications by Helena Blavatsky and Thomas Troward, Law of Attraction work in the early 20th century quickly began to proliferate. A wide range of authors published their unique spin on the concept of manifestation. Many of them illustrate their accounts with examples of success in their own lives. As we explore the works of a few of the most prominent and exciting early 20th century practitioners, you will notice that many of them came up with language and concepts that we continue to employ when working with the Law of Attraction.
1906 – William Walker Atkinson And The Law Of Attraction History
According to William Walker Atkinson, Law of Attraction practitioners should focus on strengthening their willpower, improving their focus and developing magnetism that attracts good things into their lives.
In his lifetime, he wrote more than 100 books. For a time he practiced law alongside his writing. He later returned to law in his later life. At one point, he was the co-editor of a prominent New Thought journal and a related magazine. His aim was to help spread the word about manifestation and encourage readers to expand on his ideas. His Law of Attraction work takes significant aspects from Hindi spiritual teachings, and some of his most praised collaborators were practicing Hindus. Today, we still use some of the language and conceptual frameworks that he presented in his teachings, including ideas about heightening vibration.
William Walker Atkinson Quotes
“The secret of success is to try always to improve yourself no matter where you are or what your position. Learn all you can. Don't see how little you can do, but how much you can do.”
“Permit each man to think according to his light.”
“All persons ought to practice their visualizing power. This will react upon perception and make it more definite. Visualizing will also form a brain habit of remembering things pictorially, and hence more exactly.”
“We generally see that for which we look.”
1910 – The Science Of Getting Rich By Wallace Delois Wattles
Famous for The Science of Getting Rich (published in 1910), Wallace Delois Wattles created a burst of new interest in the Law of Attraction. In fact, his works continue to be read by contemporary audiences. One of the key messages of The Science of Getting Rich is that we should develop our own manifestation potential rather than assuming that need to be taught by experts.
Fond of working with other New Thought practitioners, Wattles often presented lectures alongside publishing his books. In this way, he traveled prolifically to spread his teachings. Wattles offers plainly worded, clear techniques that anyone can use. He emphasized that we can adapt these to more than just our desire for abundance. He also explained and encouraged creative visualization, which remains a cornerstone of the current Law of Attraction practice.
Wallace Delois Wattles Quotes
“No man is born incapable of growth.”
“Go on in the certain way, and if you do not receive that thing, you will receive something so much better that you will see that the seeming failure was really a great success.”
“Do all the work you can do, every day, and do each piece of work in a perfectly successful manner; put the power of success, and the purpose to get rich, into everything that you do.”
“By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it.”
1937 – Think And Grow Rich By Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hill began his career as a journalist. However, he became famous after outlining his Law of Attraction techniques in the 1937 book Think and Grow Rich. Drawing on his own experiences of personal difficulties, he aimed to show how we can overcome our challenges and use manifestation tools to create a happy, fulfilling life.
Unlike earlier Law of Attraction writers, he was not influenced by religious teachers so much as writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson. Napoleon Hill was crucial for our understanding of how negative thinking beliefs attract more negativity into our lives. Most current Law of Attraction practitioners agree with his claim that believing in our own potential makes that potential abundant. In addition, he encouraged readers to find a life purpose and to work toward that.
Napoleon Hill Quotes
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
“You are the master of your destiny. You can influence, direct and control your own environment. You can make your life what you want it to be.”
“If you can't do great things, do small things in a great way.”
“A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.”
Mid-Late 20th Century Law Of Attraction History
The Law of Attraction only became more popular and influential in the mid to late 20th century. For example, Jerry and Esther Hicks rose to prominence in the 1980s, purporting to channel messages from non-physical beings. Esther Hicks' nine books (collectively called The Teachings Of Abraham) provide highly readable explanations of how the Law of Attraction works. Plus, it contains wisdom about how you can use The Law Of Attraction to manifest the things you desire.
Meanwhile, New Thought writer Louise Hay has been instrumental in popularizing the idea of using affirmations to support your Law of Attraction goals. A proponent of self-love and self-compassion, she has helped Law of Attraction practitioners see the power that a positive self-concept has to boost your vibration and increase your ability to manifest.
Other significant Law of Attraction authors in the mid to late 20th century include Richard Weiss and W. Clement Stone. Clement Stone co-authored work on attracting success with Napoleon Hill.
Meanwhile, Weiss is known for connecting the Law of Attraction with what he calls the principle of non-resistance. According to this principle, we attract things when we actively put energy into trying to resist them.
20th Century Law Of Attraction History Quotes
“If you want it and expect it, it will be yours very soon.”
– Esther Hicks
“You have the power to heal your life, and you need to know that. We think so often that we are helpless, but we're not. We always have the power of our minds…Claim and consciously use your power.”
– Louise L. Hay
“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
– W. Clement Stone
“In order for things to change, you have to see them as you want them to be rather than continuing to observe them as they are.”
– Esther Hicks
21st Century Law Of Attraction History And The Secret
In the 21st century, Rhonda Bryne's book The Secret (and her associated film) has turned the Law of Attraction from a niche interest into a concept with worldwide fame and general applicability. The Secret presents the views and teachings of a wide range of prominent and emerging Law of Attraction practitioners. The film contained wisdom from Marie Diamond, Joe Vitale, and Jack Canfield. The film is known for its straightforward, empowering approach to manifestation. For example, it stresses that setting goals, reflecting on negativity and learning new ways of thinking are all key to getting what you really want. Readers and viewers come away from his material believing that anyone can use the Law of Attraction to their advantage; that it is not the purview of experts, or of the spiritually evolved.
Both the film and book were an enormous success. The Secret spread the word that we all have the power to create our reality and (as Bryne often puts it) “thoughts can become things”. The book has sold over 20 million copies and is highly influential among celebrities.
For example, the actor Will Smith credits his use of the Law of Attraction for many of his positive experiences. In addition, Oprah Winfrey has promoted The Secret to her viewers. Meanwhile, boxer Conor McGregor has said that he “dreamed his win into reality”.
The Future Of The Law Of Attraction
As for the future, we can expect interest to grow exponentially. With increasing celebrity endorsements, new books constantly being released, and free Law of Attraction guides being made available, anyone and everyone can learn how to use manifestation techniques. And as new people come to understand the Law of Attraction, some of them will inevitably go on to publish their own work. Consequently, they may introduce vital new concepts and techniques that will move our success even further forward.

Self Hypnosis Downloads For Manifesting The Best Version of You
Whether you're trying to manifest love, money, an ideal career or a greater level of confidence, it's likely that certain parts of your past are holding you back.
The difficulties we face in our early lives can lead to self-destructive background assumptions, problematic habits and deep-rooted fears. All of these things can then create blocks that we have little control over, and that may stand in our way without our awareness.
So, how do you change these parts of yourself so that they don't interfere with your ability to use the Law of Attraction? Self-hypnosis may be the answer.
While you've probably heard of hypnosis, you may not know what self-hypnosis actually involves or how it can help you. We'll take a closer look at what it really means to be hypnotized, examine the evidence about whether it works, and explore how you can combine self-hypnosis and manifestation techniques to create the best possible version of yourself.
What Is Self Hypnosis?
When you are hypnotized, you enter a deeply relaxed, highly suggestible state. At this time, it's possible to bypass the defenses of your conscious mind and reshape subconscious beliefs, desires, and assumptions that are holding you back.
In traditional hypnotherapy, a therapist guides you into this stage and imparts messages that support your goals. In contrast, self-hypnosis involves putting yourself into a hypnotic trance. In fact, you've probably been in a light hypnotic trance already – think of how you feel when you lose yourself while daydreaming, listening to the ocean or watching flames.
Going into a self-induced hypnotic state simply requires deepening this state and focusing your attention on something you want to change.
Whether you work with a hypnotherapist or use self-hypnosis downloads, the end result is the same – you work to overcome limiting beliefs, emotions or habits that you feel stand between you and success.
You can practice self-hypnosis by listening to audio recordings, or by learning techniques that guide you into hypnosis. It doesn't require sophisticated expertise or much experience, and it is a convenient, private and safe way to enjoy the benefits of hypnotherapy.
What Is Self Hypnosis And What Is The Psychology Of Hypnosis?
With the above idea of self-hypnosis in mind, we can turn to think about some of the psychology behind self-hypnosis. For one thing, it's important to note that self-hypnosis isn't importantly different from being hypnotized by a therapist.
This is because all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, in the sense that it requires you to willingly, deliberately enter a trance. This point was first made by one of the original hypnotists, Dr. Milton Erickson, who made consistent efforts to debunk unhelpful myths about hypnotherapy.
As he explained, hypnotherapists – whether on a recording or in person – are just guides and facilitators. They can make it easier to enter a trance and they can add structure to your experience, but they aren't necessary for the process to work.
Another key fact about the psychology of hypnosis is that you can't be made to think, feel or believe things that aren't in line with your values.
While hypnosis opens up your subconscious mind, it will only take on things that reflect your genuine desires. This means that hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis are also incapable of making you behave in ways you wouldn't want to.
So, in the case of using self-hypnosis to enhance your Law of Attraction work, you set an intention and then use hypnotherapy to reinforce that intention. It's helpful to think of hypnosis not as changing you into a different person but as stripping away and deconstructing some of the barriers that prevent you from being your very best self.
The 3 Stages of Hypnosis
Manifesting the best version of yourself through hypnosis is a process that involves three stages.
Firstly, you go through a hypnotic induction phase, the purpose of which is to put your mind into the right space to be hypnotized. At this point, you also induce a deep level of relaxation in your body.
Secondly, you move on to the creative visualization stage, in which you build up a detailed mental image of exactly what you want to change and what you want to attract into your life. This is the key part of hypnosis—the part that facilitates positive transformation.
Thirdly, you exit the hypnotic trance in a gentle, gradual way that allows you to hold onto what you have experienced during hypnosis.
We'll break down all of these stages of self-hypnosis, explaining their relevance and what they feel like.
Stage 1: Hypnotic induction
Depending on how easy you find it to relax, the induction phase of self-hypnosis may take more or less time.
You will adopt a comfortable position and concentrate on clearing your mind, much as you would during a mindfulness session.
It is common to enter this stage of hypnosis by focusing on deep, even breathing. With time and experience, this phase becomes natural and quick for most people.
Stage 2: Creative Visualization
As noted above, the creative visualization stage of self-hypnosis is key. It is at this point that you begin to reshape ideas, feelings, and habits that stand between you and your goal.
During the visualization phase, you will need to use not only your full focus but also your imagination. In addition, you will need a clear intention in mind, which you will have set before starting the self-hypnosis process.
Once again, this phase tends to deepen with time, becoming more powerful as you practice self-hypnosis and become used to the process.
Stage 3: Exiting Hypnotic State
Once you have built up a detailed visualization and have immersed yourself in your intention, you move on to the exit stage of self-hypnosis.
There are different ways to approach this, and it is not difficult to end a hypnotic trance. However, the goal is to make it feel like a smooth transition to normal consciousness.
Some people set a timer that uses soft music to bring them back to their surroundings. Others build a cue (such as counting backwards from 10) into the hypnosis journey, leading themselves out of the trance.
Does Self Hypnosis Work And is It Safe?
Self-hypnosis works just as well as hypnosis guided by an in-person therapist, and it can be effective for a wide range of obstacles to manifestation. We'll look at more of the science behind hypnosis below, but first, let's begin by tackling some of the most common worries.
Firstly, if you believe that hypnosis can be ineffective, you might wonder if you may just be immune to self-hypnosis. In other words, perhaps it might not work for you.
However, studies show that more than 80% of people induce a form of hypnotic trance just by focusing on something like a song, a book or an image. If you're in this group, you're likely to find self-hypnosis fairly straightforward. And if you aren't in this group, there's compelling evidence that you can still learn the skills required for self-hypnosis. After all, the most recent research indicates that close to 95% of people are easy to hypnotize.
It's also common for people to worry that audio hypnosis might be dangerous.
Could you get “stuck” in a trance, for example?
The good news is that this is impossible.
Everything about hypnosis requires your consent, no matter what you see on television!
This means that you can choose to exit a hypnotic trance at any time.
Another common question asked; is hypnosis safe? Hypnosis is also proven safe for most people, with the possible exception of those with epilepsy or schizophrenia diagnoses.
As for potential side-effects of autohypnosis, a mild level of sleepiness is the only major side-effect that people report. You may also experience more intense dreams, but this can be inspiring and offer new level insights.
In sum, hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis are powerful, effective tools that are typically very safe and pose no risk to your autonomy.
Science-Backed Benefits Of Hypnosis

Weight loss: when compared with other psychological strategies, it is estimated that hypnosis is roughly 30 times more powerful at helping with weight loss as well as overcoming binge eating too.
Relaxation: the National Institutes of Health endorse hypnotherapy as an evidence-based alternative therapy for anxiety issues and learning to relax.
Phobia reduction: hypnosis is commonly used to help people overcome fear of public speaking, flying, specific animals, heights, social situations and surgical procedures.
Smoking cessation: smokers are approximately twice as likely to quit their habit after undergoing hypnotherapy sessions (when compared to people attempting to use willpower alone).
Chronic pain reduction: 75% of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) notice less severe symptoms after hypnotherapy, and burn victims typically also experience some pain relief. Self-reported sufferers of chronic pain also notice a reduction in tension headache frequency after hypnosis.
Negative habit busting: as well as helping people overcome smoking and over-eating, hypnotherapy has documented benefits for those struggling with compulsive alcohol use, gambling addictions, procrastination and nail biting.
Confidence boosting: people who have internalized critical thoughts about themselves can find relief though hypnosis, developing a new perspective on their strengths and a kinder “inner voice.”
Using Self Hypnosis Alongside The Law Of Attraction
You are now in a good position to think more deeply about the links between autohypnosis and the Law of Attraction.
There are three major connections worth discussing.
Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, working with the Law of Attraction requires believing that the Law of Attraction actually exists.
In addition, it requires believing that you can use your thoughts and intentions to change the world around you. However, if you struggle to accept these facts, you're not alone. It's hard to make the mind change its perception of reality, even if you desperately want to manifest a better life.
Auto-hypnosis can help to embed the Law of Attraction in your subconscious mind, making it easier to accept and believe. It can tackle the blocks that make you doubt the possibility of manifestation.
The second major connection is between autohypnosis and self-esteem. When you have limiting beliefs that tell you that you don't deserve the things you're trying to manifest, it's almost impossible to attract those things into your life.
Through self-hypnosis downloads, you can come to value yourself more and change the way you see yourself. By affirming new, supportive beliefs like “I deserve to be loved” and “I know I can succeed”, hypnotherapy can give you the kind of positive self-concept you need.
Finally, since self-hypnosis requires visualization, you get better at the process of creative visualization every time you do an auto-hypnosis session. This means that when you're visualizing your Law of Attraction goals outwith hypnosis, you'll do so in a more detailed and vivid way. And as Law of Attraction experts note, clear and intense visualizations help to align you with the thing you want to manifest, helping you succeed at a faster rate.
How To Hypnotize Yourself
Armed with a good sense of what self hypnosis can achieve and its connections to the Law of Attraction, you can start to learn the skills yourself.
Here is a step-by-step guide to a basic form of self-hypnosis that you can practice at home:
1. Identify your current relaxation level, with 0 being the most relaxed and 10 being the most stressed.
2. Get into a comfortable position and close your eyes.
3. Breathe deeply, inhaling for 7 seconds and exhaling for 7 seconds. Repeat this 5 times.
4. Think of your favorite color, name it out loud, and picture it flooding your body, making your limbs glow.
5. Say the following: “Three, I move deeper and deeper into a trance. Two, I move deeper and deeper into a trance. One, I move deeper and deeper into a trance.”
6. Once again, picture your favorite color flowing through your body.
7. You should now feel relaxed, your body is heavy and tension-free. Say the following slowly and clearly: “I am calm, I am happy, and I am relaxed.”
8. Think about how you want to feel, and imagine that you really do feel that way. So, if you want to be productive instead of wasting time, picture yourself at your most productive. Similarly, if you want to be bold and confident at work instead of feeling shy, picture yourself in that newly outgoing state. Spend a minute building up details of this image.
9. Feel and see your favorite color moving through you from head to toe again.
10. Say the following to yourself: “One, I am moving out of my trance. Two, I am moving out of my trance. Three, I am emerging from my trance.”
11. Grade your level of relaxation level, and note what has changed.
Hypnosis Downloads: ehypnosis.com Review
I have been using these self hypnosis downloads over the last couple of years where I've enjoyed some fine results. By concentrating on 1-2 topics at a time, it's really worked out well for me. I use the same hypnosis audios / hypnosis CD's for 21-30 days and then notice significant improvements. I've improved work habits, concentration levels and made significant personal progress. The Creative Visualization program I especially loved… it really got me to relax and see life more vividly.
The work of Dr. Steve G. Jones has allowed me to regain power over the subconscious beliefs that have held me back in my life. I highly recommend his work.

How Do I know If I Can Be Hypnotized?
If you want to find out if you can be hypnotized, there are ways to find out how susceptible you are.
Think about this:
Have ever experienced driving somewhere, whilst in deep thought, without even noticing that you ended up driving past your turnoff?
Your mind was elsewhere and as a result, you were oblivious to where you were going, and what you were supposed to be doing.
Believe it or not, you were in a light state of hypnosis. That is a compliment because the brighter you are the more susceptible you are to being hypnotized.
